As such, Tropic of Cancer was both participating in and actively detaching itself from the literary and political landscape in which it was written. It also incorporates elements of the Surrealist and Dadaist movements, though Miller makes it clear throughout Tropic of Cancer that he does not want to be associated with any organized systems of thought or expression in one of his epiphanic realizations, he says, “Who that has a desperate, hungry eye can have the slightest regard for these existent government, laws, codes, principles, ideals, ideals, totems, and taboos?” (249). ![]() Tropic of Cancer brings together various genres, including autobiography, memoir, manifesto, and philosophical tract. It was the subject of legal disputes and censorship attempts for decades, though ironically it has never been out of print. Miller referred to it as his “Paris book,” and it was wildly controversial for its candid depictions of sex. ![]() Tropic of Cancer (1934) was Henry Miller’s third novel after the never-published Clipped Wings (1922) and Moloch: or, This Gentile World (1928). ![]()

Yes, I am still terrified of that film, and really haven’t watched a horror movie since. ![]() The book cover itself is a high selling point, but at the same time scared me because it reminded me of the scariest movie ever- The Ring. It’s always difficult to pin down the genesis of an idea but I recall the basis of Blood Song germinating for a few years but not really coming together until I started my history studies. Also, although I had a one page synopsis, I wasn’t working to a detailed plan, something I’ve subsequently learned is very useful in speeding up the writing process. ![]() Working a full time job whilst studying part time for a history degree had a lot to do with the time taken to write Blood Song. In this exclusive interview, Anthony talks to us about his work and inspirations.īlood Song is an epic fantasy in every sense of the word – particularly in that it took you six years to write! Why did it take so long and what was the spark that started it all? BLOOD SONG ( UK | ANZ) was published last week to a chorus of rave reviews and online buzz that heralded the novel as one of the year’s best epic fantasy debuts and author Anthony Ryan as a huge new talent in the genre. ![]() 6/29/2023 0 Comments Big fish wallace![]() ![]() “Suicide is one of the most traumatic deaths, no matter how it’s undertaken,” Wallace writes, “and those left behind suffer through a complicated grief that may never subside.” In exploring his own particularly complicated grief, Wallace reveals his coming of age as a writer, the tragic yet inspiring life of his sister Holly, and a cast of larger-than-life characters as beguiling as any of his fictional inventions. In the note, Wallace lays out the central tragedy: the suicide of William Nealy, his brother-in-law, childhood hero, and inspiration to become a writer. ![]() ![]() You know where a book is headed when the author’s note before the first chapter includes the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number. Yet as the title promises, the true story Wallace has waited decades to tell is tragic and heartrending. His first nonfiction book, This Isn’t Going to End Well: The True Story of a Man I Thought I Knew, occasionally provides some of the same wackiness as his fiction. Since then he has produced a steady stream of comically odd Southern fiction, most recently Extraordinary Adventures in 2017. Daniel Wallace is best known for Big Fish, his 1998 debut novel, and its star-studded 2003 film adaptation by director Tim Burton. ![]() 6/28/2023 0 Comments Whatever by william bee![]() ![]() Published in 1962, the library’s copy isn’t so pretty anymore, but the story hasn’t lost its charm. I’d never heard of it, but was interested because of the author. I read Pierre when a friend of mine recalled reading it when he was young. I love this book! I also have to wonder if William Bee got his inspiration from Maurice Sendak’s Pierre: A Cautionary Tale in Five Chapters and a Prologue. But even if you think you can guess what happens, I’m sure the ending will still make you smile. Then, Billy’s dad tries to scare him with the world’s hungriest tiger and, well… I won’t give away the ending. He shows him the world’s smokiest train and the world’s curliest trumpet, and even flies with Billy to the edge of outer space. He shows him something very tall, and something very small. In this picture book, all that ever comes out of Billy’s mouth is, “Whatever.” Billy’s dad spends the length of the book trying to get some sort of reaction out of Billy. “Billy can be very difficult to please.” Well, that’s an understatement. ![]() 6/28/2023 0 Comments Dead Cert by Dick Francis![]() ![]() " master of crime fiction and equine thrills." - Newsday "Few match Francis for dangerous flights of fancy and pure inventive menace." - Boston Herald "Few things are more convincing than Dick Francis at a full gallop." - Chicago Tribune "An imaginative craftsman of high order." - The Sunday Times "Dick Francis is a wonder." - Cleveland Plain Dealer But even as he approaches the finish line to this mysterious race, those responsible for his friend's death are already planning for Alan to have a mysterious accident of his own.
